Centre of attention

We haven't diverged yet from what the Lonely Planet tells us and I am already accustomed to having people look me up and down. If I'm getting the full on gawk, then I say 'merhaba' or 'iyi gunler' ... that usually jolts them out of looking. Most people though are used to tourists in town, and we are happy to play the part of stupid tourists if we get to visit their town for a while.

Lastnight, we had dinner out on the terrace at a restaurant. We had it to ourselves, probably because there was a breeze. For us, it was perfect weather. It has been 20 to 25 degrees each day and we both are slightly less white now.

Today has been laid back ... a long breakfast chat with our host Aydin and then the Red Basilica for a short while. We realized we had loads of time left in the day, so we went to the Asclepion. It was an ancient medical centre that rose to world fame in 131 AD. Still in fairly good condition, we could walk through tunnels with holes above. Aydin tells me that sick people would walk through the tunnel and people above would call through the holes to play the part of gods telling them to be better. You never know with Aydin though, he also told me his grandfather was Ataturk, the founder of Turkey.

Tomorrow we will catch a bus out of town. Bergama has been worth every moment.
